Are you pregnant and been tasked by friends and family to create a wishlist with what you'd like - or need - ahead of your baby's birth? Or maybe you've been invited to a baby shower or a mother blessing ceremony and are looking for the perfect meaningful gift?
Unfortunately, too often these lists focus on baby 'stuff', and completely ignore the parents' needs; and too often parents end-up with duplicates, and more newborn clothes than actual days to use them before baby outgrows their tiny outfits...
I deeply believe in the profound value of parents' wellbeing during these life shifting weeks - just before and just after baby's birth - which is what this list focuses on. I've also added a few options of meaningful keepsakes - little treasures that capture and immortalise that precious time.
So here are my top 10 gifts for expectant Mamas and new parents in no particular order and for all budgets.
1. Pregnancy or postpartum massage
This can be such a profound gift. A pregnant body or a body that’s healing from a recent birth deserves some proper TLC, and what better way than through nurturing touch and soothing oils. Some specialised massage therapists offer mobile services, which is particularly nice - just so Mama can tuck herself into bed straight from the massage couch. Bliss.
2. Cooked meals
Never underestimate the value of a healthy cooked meal for new parents adjusting to their new life...
Cook offers 'New Baby Gift Cards' - visit their website for more info and to buy a gift card.
3. Postpartum doula visit(s)
Find a local doula who offers postpartum packages. Support can include household chores and light cleaning, preparing/ cooking meals, looking after the newborn and making time for the mother to rest, bathe or care for herself, support with breastfeeding, massage, and emotional support during the first few weeks.
4. Pamper box
I particularly love the ones that include relaxing aromatherapy products, bath salts, nipple/ lip balm, and organic teas and chocolates! But with so many options on websites like Etsy, you're guaranteed to find one that will suit your Mama's tastes.
5. A good postpartum book
If you’re on a budget but would still like to give a caring and meaningful gift, get a good book! Here is my top 5:
Best Book about Motherhood: What Mothers Do by Naomi Stadlen
Best Book about Postpartum Self-care: The Little Book of Self-Care for New Mums by Beccy Hands and Alexis Stickland
Best Book about Postpartum Nutrition: The First Forty Days by Heng Ou
Best Book about Matrescence: Mama Rising: Discovering the New You Through Motherhood by Amy Taylor-Kabbaz
Best Book about Breastfeeding: The Positive Breastfeeding Book: Everything you need to feed your baby with confidence by Amy Brown
6. Maternity photoshoot
Many mums regret not having captured their pregnancy, or the first months of their new family life. A professional photographer will be able to immortalise these precious moments so parents can cherish these images forever. Studio-based or wild backgrounds, documentary-style or posed, bright or retro grainy vibes, find a photographer whose style fits your Mama’s personality.
7. New baby keepsake gifts
If you’d rather buy a meaningful keepsake, here are a few lovely options: hand/footprint kit, baby milestones book, or a personalised star map gift card.
8. Date night 'voucher'
This can be in the form of a voucher or cash to use at their favourite local restaurant. Something to look forward to, just for them, whenever they're ready to 'leave the house'. And make sure that it includes your baby sitting services!
9. Postnatal Yoga or Pilates class passes
Joining weekly classes can be incredibly precious for new mums. Not only will they be able to gently build back some core strength and to get that pelvic floor in tip top shape, research also shows that yoga may help to prevent postpartum depression and anxiety symptoms. It’s also a great place for mothers to find their community.
10. Mama Brunch Club ticket!
Another lovely way for Mamas to meet their tribe here in Bristol is my monthly Brunch Club in BS3. Ticket includes: a delicious brunch from The Malago, practical tips from a Guest Expert, a goodie bag, and an invitation to join our WhatsApp community.
Poppy & Jack's gift cards can be applied to any of my courses and events - buy here.
You can also find other local pregnancy and postpartum services in Bristol on my website, including massage therapists, doulas and photographers.
