Mama Knows Best: 5 empowering tips for an elective caesarean section.

Bringing new life into the world is a transformative experience, and all individuals who give birth should be supported in making informed decisions about what is right for them and their babies. Over the years, advancements in medical technology and changing perspectives have expanded the options available for childbirth, and elective caesarean sections/ belly births have emerged as a viable choice for many expecting parents.

Here are 5 empowering tips if you are choosing an elective (planned) caesarean section.

1. Learn and Be Confident About Your Rights!

Informed choices during your pregnancy and as you prepare for your baby's (or babies') birth is your human right. You may feel that you are not qualified to make such an important decision. Of course you are! No one knows you or is connected to your baby as well as you are. Your mothering instinct is also incredibly powerful.

This is Your Body, Your Baby, Your Birth!

2. Ask Questions and Make Sure That the Information You Are Being Given Is Evidence-Based.

If you have any questions or concerns, make sure that you talk to your caregivers. If you are not feeling comfortable with some of the answers, then ask for a second opinion. Always ask for supporting evidence.

3. Use the Uncertainty Surrounding Birth to Help You Clarify What Is Most Important to You.

There are benefits and risks to everything and whichever path you choose for the birth of your baby, it will be paved with some form of uncertainty. Although this might seem overwhelming to some, it should be seen as a chance to focus on what matters the most to you.

4. Surround Yourself with a Supportive Team.

Make sure that the people you are sharing your birthing journey with are supportive of your choices. Create some distance with those who don't. You might want to consider hiring a Doula if you find that you are not getting enough support from your close family and friends. You should not have to navigate your birthing journey alone.

5. Book a Hypnobirthing Course.

Hypnobirthing courses are designed to support and empower people to prepare for any type of birth. The relaxation techniques are also incredibly useful as you navigate your belly birth.

A private course with tailored content might be a good option if you have already made the informed decision to have a planned c section.
