Did you know that you can identify your baby's position by yourself in the final months of pregnancy? This is called Belly Mapping, a method created by Gail Tully of Spinning Babies.
Here are three simple steps for Belly Mapping:
1 - Focus your attention on your baby's movements
It might take a few days to learn to recognise the different sensations associated to various patterns of movements and kicks. You will then be able to isolate those sensations and associate them with the part of your baby that is moving.
The best way to do this is in a semi-sitting position while breathing deeply and slowly.
2 – Use your hands to identify the following
Baby's legs = where you feel the strongest kicks. Often you can feel and even see the little feet poking out at the end of pregnancy.
Baby's back = large, flat plane. Sometimes you can feel baby arching his or her back.
Baby's head = hard, round shape at the top or bottom of the flat plane.
Baby's bottom = soft curve at the top or bottom of the flat plane.
3 – Use a piece of paper to map your baby position (see pictures below for reference).
You can use the Spinning Babies’ Belly Mapping handout as reference if you would like to refer to the medical name for your baby’s position in the womb. Click here for more information and to download the document.
In the ninth month of pregnancy you will most likely be able to tell without ultrasound if your baby is head-down, facing right, left, front, or back. However, in some circumstances, it can be difficult to feel baby through the belly. This can be due to a very firm/ tone tummy, abundant amniotic fluid, a placenta on the anterior wall, or a well-padded tummy which can all mute kicks and bumps.
My complete Hypnobirthing course includes Belly Mapping guidance as well as knowledge about babies’ various positions for birth and how to help them move into a more optimal position if needed.
